This report deals with the translation of the short story of Beloved Potatoes by Chi Zijian. This story is about a couple from the country in the Northeast of China, who loves potatoes, enjoys the life and is devoted to each other. The devotion between the wife and the husband is not affected by the fact that the latter is dying of cancer but further enhanced. This report contains four chapters. Chapter One is an introductory statement, including the project background, objectives and its significance as well as the report outline. Chapter Two gives an introduction of the source text, including the author’s information, the content, the structure and the writing style of the source text. Chapter Three is about the translation difficulties and methods. Chapter Four is the conclusion, summarizing the enlightenment gained from carrying out the project and the problems needed to be solved.Based on an analysis of the fictional text features, i.e. the fact that the narrative writing and the conversation between characters are characterized by different sentence patterns, the paper centers on the respective guiding roles of different theories in the process of translation of these two parts of the novel. As for the former, the translator uses translation methods such as addition, and recasting to demonstrate the transfer of the form and the function of sentence in Chinese-English translation resulting from the difference of different sentence structures, under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory. As for the latter, the translator needs to organize the message in the conversation in accordance of Cooperative Principle theory before carrying out the above-mentioned transfer.
