A Report On Simulated C-E Simultaneous Interpreting Of Xi Jinping's Speech At The 40th Anniversary Of Reform And Opening-up

This report is about how to cope with parallelism in C-E simultaneous interpretation based on a simulated interpretation of Xi Jinping's speech at the 40 th anniversary of reform and opening-up.In this speech,the speaker summarizes the great achievements of China since the reform and opening-up.Parallelism is frequently used in the source text,which composes some unique features of the text but also causes diverse difficulties in simultaneous interpretation.According to the classification of parallelism and the characteristics of the source text,this report divides the difficulties of parallelism interpretation into two major categories: 1.difficulties caused by parallelism at phrasal level;2.difficulties caused by parallelism at sentential level.Due to various factors,i.e.the cultural and grammatical differences between Chinese and English languages,the urgency of time and interpreter's limited energy,parallelism in the source text can cause certain problems for the interpreter in the process of interpretation,such as the overburden of short working memory,the imbalance of energy allocation,the poor quality of interpretation and so on.In light of Gile's Effort Models,simultaneous interpreting(SI)can be modeled as a process consisting of the following efforts,namely the listening and analysis effort(L),the short-term memory effort(M),the speech production effort(P),and coordination effort(C),and the process can be represented as follows: SI = L + P + M+ C.Through careful analysis of the source text under the guidance of the EffortModels,the interpreter proposes different interpreting tactics to cope with the aforementioned difficulties.For the difficulties caused by parallelism at phrasal level,the interpreter adopts the tactics of simplification,syntactic linearity and conversion.The tactics of reformulation and paraphrase are applied to cope with the difficulties caused by parallelism at sentential level.Practice shows that the above-mentioned tactics can effectively solve the difficulties of parallelism interpretation,which will hopefully provide some useful references for other interpreters to finish C-E interpretation of such speeches of political significance.
