Factors Causing Imbalanced Effort Distribution In Simultaneous Interpreting And Coping Tactics-A Report On A Simultaneous Interpreting Task Of A Training Lecture On Huawei’s Brand Strategy

Simultaneous interpreting, as a working form of interpreting, refers to a complex activity which conveys a message into another language at almost the same time with the original speaker. During the process of SI, interpreters need to perform multiple tasks such as listening and analysis, information processing, short-term memorizing and speech producing at virtually the same time. For successful accomplishment of those tasks, SI interpreters are required to properly distribute and coordinate their time and effort so as to meet processing capacity requirements.In this report, the author analyzes several major factors causing imbalanced effort distribution in SI and discusses relevant coping tactics from the perspective of Gile’s Effort Models. In the first two chapters, she describes the SI task in details and elaborates on the interpreting process. In chapter three, she gives a brief introduction about Gile’s Effort Models and defines the Imbalanced Effort Distribution discussed in this report. Taking her SI task in Huawei as the case, she then analyzes the three main factors leading to imbalanced effort distribution and raises four feasible coping tactics. The major findings, implications and limitations of the report as well as the suggestions for future research are summarized and presented in the last chapter. It is hoped that other interpreters can benefit from this paper and can better achieve efficient effort distribution in their future interpreting tasks.
