Reading ability is an important language learning ability for students in the process of English learning.Through reading,students can not only acquire textual knowledge and information,expand their vocabulary,but also accumulate foreign cultural knowledge to improve their English reading ability,so as to ultimately promote the formation and development of students' comprehensive language application ability and achieve the purpose of lifelong learning.English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education puts forward five levels of target requirements for students' reading ability,then according to the setting of grading target: in the compulsory education stage,the fourth grade should complete the first-level target and the sixth grade should complete the second-level target.However,in the actual English learning,most of the students could not complete the reading grading target of the new curriculum standards.Therefore,the purpose of this paper is to study the problems existing in students' English reading learning through combing the relevant theories,investigating the current situation of students' English reading ability and analyzing teachers' interviews,then putting forward some countermeasures to cultivate students' English reading ability.This paper chooses questionnaire survey as the main research method,test method and interview method to supplement the questionnaire survey.And based on English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education and China's Standards of English Language Ability,176 fourth-grade students and 205 sixth-grade students from three primary schools in C city were selected as the survey subjects.Through analyzing the survey results,it is found that the primary school students in English reading mainly have the problems of insufficient vocabulary,lacking of scientific reading methods,single reading materials,lacking of scientific evaluation system,and less number of English reading activities.On the basis of the survey results,the causes of the problems are analyzed from three aspects: students,teachers and schools,as well as the effective countermeasures are put forward.Firstly,in terms of students,arousing the enthusiasm of learning,forming good study habits,enhancing the ability of independent learning,and clarifying the purpose of reading learning;Secondly,in terms of teachers,expanding reading materials,stimulating reading interest,using scientific methods,improving reading ability,using textbooks reasonably,achieving gradient teaching,paying attention to language use,paying attention to language output,improving professional level,then adapting to the requirements of curriculum reform;Thirdly,in terms of schools,establishing the scientific evaluation systems,expanding students' reading channels,and providing the professional learning platforms for teachers.
