| The Belt and Road Initiative and the cultural globalization lead to the urgent demand to make Chinese culture go global.Translation from Chinese to English plays a critical role in spreading Chinese culture. The enhancement of national cultural confidence is more necessary in the context of cultural globalization.Speeches about Chinese culture attract more and more attention with their rich cultural connotations and simple language.Of course, the English translation of these speeches will make it easier for foreign readers to understand Chinese culture. The book The World of Chinese,a collection of Chinese cultural speeches covering language, literature, and history,is selected as the source text for this translation practice.A number of culture-loaded words,four-character phrases, and quotations of ancient poems and essays in the source text bring great challenges to the translation practice.Adaptation theory is chosen to guide the translation of the book.It involves four angles of investigation, that is,contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.Through case analysis, problems in the translation practice will be resolved from the perspectives of contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability.Under the guidance of contextual adaptation, literal translation with an annotation, transliteration with a generic word and free translation are used to deal with culture-loaded words;anaphora, substitution and connectives are selected to achieve the cohesion of the target text.Under the instruction of structural adaptation, paraphrase, equivalence and omission are chosen to translate four-character phrases;division, voice conversion and reformulation are applied to cope with run-on sentences;voice conversion, addition and combination are adopted to translate non-subject sentences;addition, antithesis and division are employed to render quotations of ancient Chinese poems and essays. |
