Concerning the translation of a literary work, most of us are pursuing the principle of “faithful in meaning and vivid in description” without clear understanding about how to achieve it. The answer may be figured out under the guidance of Contextual Adaptation Theory. It would undoubtedly cause some obstructions when translating the novel Keep on Living regarding the use of some idiomatic Chinese expressions, for the target readers could not catch the main point when they read the literal translation first time. Considering this point, free translation will be added to the translation process and Contextual Adaptation Theory will be made use of to guide my translation practice. Standing in the position of our target readers to think what they are caring about when doing such kind of thing may be a good way to produce a better translation. In the translation of the first two chapters in Keep on living, it will focus on the discussion of translation strategies and translation techniques. The translation strategy is mainly concerned about the use of domesticating method. As for the translation techniques, this study explores supplement, ellipsis, reconstruction, transplantation, voice transformation and dragging formation to the pursuit of meaning. Moreover, this paper summarizes several practical translation methods, in hope of providing certain reference to such kind of novels.
