| Poverty Alleviation Miracle: Chinese Practice gives a comprehensive review of poverty alleviation practice and results in China. This book includes 50 classic anti-poverty cases, covering poverty alleviation through Party building, education and enterprises. It summarizes significant achievements and valuable experience gained through anti-poverty endeavors of the whole country. This report selects the introduction part and six typical cases from six chapters as translation materials, and translate them into English guided by adaptation theory. It aims to bring inspiration and references for global poverty governance while also serving as an excellent opportunity to promote the wisdom and solutions of China to the world.Guided by the adaptation theory of Verschueren, this C-E translation practice employs four angles of investigation in adaptation theory, namely the salience of adaptation processes, dynamics of adaptability, contextual adaptability, and structural adaptability. These angles serve as a framework to guide and justify choices-making in language use based on intra-and extra-linguistic factors.Through an analysis of which angle of adaptation theory is necessary and how to adapt C-E publicity materials using various translation methods and techniques in each trade-off.This practice draws the following main conclusions:Firstly, the adaptation theory provides a panoramic framework for each choice-making in the translation process, with multiple dimensions to be considered.Secondly,it is the translator who bears the responsibility to decide the final translated version from various negotiable choices, while being constrained by both intra-and extra-linguistic factors. Finally,in the C-E political translation, paraphrase and imitation methods, addition and shift techniques can be effective in dealing with discrepancies in communicative contexts;literal translation can serve as an auxiliary to disseminate source culture and conventions;to gap linguistic structures between English and Chinese, omission and shift are common at the lexical level;division and inversion are frequently used at the syntax level;while at the textual level, addition, shift, division are common techniques to adapt to the linguistic context. This translation practice justifies and summarizes the choice of translation methods and techniques guided by four investigative angles of adaptation theory. It has the potential to enrich the application of adaptation theory in the field of poverty alleviation translation, promote the dissemination of successful Chinese poverty alleviation practices and contribute to global poverty alleviation endeavors. |
