Nowadays,Chinese learning is growing rapidly globally,with majority of the studies taking place in students’ native language.The selection and application of Chinese textbooks is critical as they serve the purpose of post class tutors.Being the frontline of Chinese tutoring,the Confucius Institute should take extra consideration on the textbooks by taking into account the demographics of language learners and local education system in order to maximize textbooks’ effectiveness and improve the overall education quality.Appointed by the Office of Chinese Promotion,the author joined the one-year voluntary teaching position at Honam University,South Korea,for the better understanding of Koreans’ textbook on oral Chinese starting Feb 2019.The “Speaking Chinese(intermediate)” was selected as the representative textbook and investigated from the aspects of educational content,student,and instructor.This article primarily analyzed the textbook with questionnaires and interviews,while statistical analysis and peer researches were utilized.The education atmosphere and students’ demand were incorporated to provide recommendation on how to use this textbook for students,instructors,as well as Confucius Institute at Honam Univ.The article is broken down into 5 chapters:Chapter 1,Introduction,briefly explained the research background,content,purpose and research methods.Chapter 2 and 3 analyzed the specific of textbook’s each section and its usage in current instructing scenarios.The characteristics and reason for selection among students were derived according to peer studies and theoretical researches,backed by questionnaire results.The layout of this textbook is straightforward with complete structure,in terms of content.However,while having moderate difficulty and practical topics,it lacks proper order on arrangement of grammatical points.Chapter 4 provided suggestions for future users of the textbook.Based on the questionnaires,interview surveys,and analysis results of the textbook,suggestions were made for teachers,students,and Confucius Institute at Honam Univ.Chapter 5,Conclusion,summarized the result of this research,and listed the pros and cons on how was the “Speaking Chinese(intermediate)” used by the Confucius Institute at Honam Univ.Appendix of this article included the raw data collected from the questionnaire and interviews with teachers.
