The origin of Chinese wuxia fiction can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty. It is one of the most long-standing Chinese literary genres. As a cultural treasure of China,it is deeply loved by all walks of life.As a master of wuxia fiction,Jin Yong is well-known in the Asian literary world, and his works are absolutely the first choice for many translators. However, only four works of Jin Yong have been translated, among which Legends of the Condor Heroes is the latest. This is the first time that Jin Yong's works have been published by a commercial publisher, making it possible for Western readers to get in touch with Jin Yong's works.Because Legends of the Condor Heroes is the most widely circulated and influential in Jin Yong's works,it established his authority in the contemporary wuxia fiction field.Since the translation has just been published, there is little research on it,let alone on English translations of martial terms of it;thus study on English translation of martial terms of it is very urgent and necessary.Based on the understanding of the first two volumes of Legends of the Condor Heroes, this thesis divides the martial terms into three categories for discussion: martial styles, martial moves, and martial groups.According to the characteristics of martial terms under different categories, this thesis researches the translators' adaptation and selection of martial terms from three dimensions: linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension so as to summarize a set of translation methods applicable to the English translation of martial terms in wuxia fiction, promoting the spread of wuxia fiction and Chinese culture, enriching translation practice and promoting the development of translation theory. In the process of translating martial terms of wuxia fiction, the adaptation of linguistic dimension is reflected in the selection of grammatical structure and wording;the adaptation of cultural dimension is reflected in the treatment of Chinese allusions, philosophical concepts, religious elements, and so on;the adaptation of communicative dimension is reflected in translation methods used to convey the communicative intentions of the source text.Translators need to make adaptations to the eco-environment when translating each category of martial terms and make reasonable selections. This thesis is divided into seven parts. The first chapter introduces the research background, research significance and thesis structure. The second chapter reviews the research on Jin Yong's wuxia fiction and the English translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes. The third chapter is the theoretical framework, introducing the theory of Eco-translatology.The fourth chapter gives a general introduction to the martial terms in the first two volumes of Legends of the Condor Heroes. The fifth chapter analyzes the translation of martial terms under the guidance of Eco-translatology to obtain the two translators' translation methods. The last chapter is the conclusion, indicating the research findings(a set of translation methods for martial terms with a flow chart attached),limitations and recommendations for subsequent research. The research results of this thesis are as follows: 1.For the English translation of martial terms, after making appropriate adaptation and selection in the linguistic dimension, cultural dimension, and communicative dimension,a reasonable translation can be obtained;2.Seven translation strategies for English translation of martial terms are summarized;3.A flowchart for reference of English translation of martial terms is provided——first judge the type of martial term, whether it belongs to the martial styles, martial moves or martial groups, and then make adaptations and selections in the three dimensions from the two aspects: structure and content.
