A Report On E-C Translation Of The Excerpts From The Legacy Of The Great War:Ninety Yeas On

The profound impact of World War I on humankind has aroused widespread concern in the academic community.This report selects Chapter V of The Legacy of the Great War: Ninety Years on as translation text,which mainly talks about the memory and influence of World War I and also expresses relevant views on the main topic.Directed by the theory of Eco-Translatology proposed by Hu Gengshen,this report takes the translation of chapter V as a practical case to analyze the difficulties met in the translation practice,and then refines the corresponding translation strategies.This report on translation practice first introduces the content of the translation task,including the main idea and the characteristics of the text as well as the brief introduction of Eco-Translatology.By reviewing the three steps of translating,including preparation,individual translating and post-review,the translator finds that the language of the original text is communicative and there exist many long sentences caring cultural background information,all of which form the difficulties in the translating practice.Based on that,the translator presents difficult points in the aspects of characteristic vocabulary,long sentence and textual cohesion,and then introduces the translating strategies with detailed explanations for some translating cases.Specifically,the translator uses skills of omission and explanation in translating characteristic words,structural division and combination in translating long sentences,and specifying and reappearing in textual cohesion.The whole translation process is conducted under the guidance of Eco-Translatology from the perspectives of translation ecotope,adaptive selection theory,and three-dimensional transformation.The significance of this translation practice is mainly reflected in the following three aspects.First,it helps readers to understand the impact of World War I comprehensively.Secondly,the selected text's inclusiveness is conducive to improving the reader's critical consciousness and ability to analyze problems from multiple angles.Finally,by using the theory of Eco-Translatology to guide the translation of conversational texts,the translator aims to improve the quality of the translation as well as boost the development of the translating strategies for this type of texts.
