Abstract/Summary:
From the perspective of the Effort Model, this study focuses on the postpositive attributive conversion in English–Chinese simultaneous interpreting. To achieve this research goal, the author submits three research questions:(1)What is the proportional relationship of the successfully interpreted postpositive attributives and the misinterpreted and omitted postpositive attributives in the corpus of the study?(2)What coping tactics are adopted by the interpreter to successfully interpret the postpositive attributives in the source language?(3)What are the causes of any misinterpretations and omissions of postpositive attributives? To answer these research questions,88 minutes of bilingual audio from the 2018 Tianjin Summer Davos Forum were selected and transcribed into a 34173 words corpus to be used as the research data.Using current definitions and academic norms for the interpreting field, this study aligns the English source language and the Chinese interpreting in sentence-level text. The author then sets postpositive attributives as the unit of analysis, annotates the bilingual corpus into a quantitative form, and then assesses the proportional relationship of the successfully interpreted postpositive attributives, the misinterpreted and omitted postpositive attributives. The author then analyzes the coping tactics adopted by the interpreters that helped to successfully interpret postpositive attributives. Finally, based on the theory of Effort Model, this study analyzes the reasons for the misinterpretations and omissions occurred in the interpreting of postpositive attributives. The research has generated a range of results. As analysis of this original bi-lingual corpus has concluded that 71% of postpositive attributives are successfully interpreted,7% are misinterpreted and 22% are omitted altogether. For those postpositive attributives that are successfully interpreted, interpreters primarily used a variety of interpretation tactics including segmentation, waiting, and repetition.Based on the theory of Effort Model, due to the increased dependency distance of the source language, the load of short-term memory and listening capability is increased, which resulted in the misinterpretation or omission of the postpositive attributives and a decline in their interpreting quality. The research results on gained in this analysis have a wide range of applications.Exploring the conversion of postpositive attributives in simultaneous interpreting can improve interpreter’s ability to cope with postpositive attributive conversion.Given limited time and effort, the interpreters might be better able to select appropriate tactics to provide the best interpreting and provide interpreting practice. On a theoretical level, this study supports Gile’s Effort Model, which included significant applications for the continuing development of the processes and products that comprise the global understanding and industry of field of interpretation.
