Flame retardant is a type of auxiliary agent used to prevent or suppress the combustion of polymeric materials, which plays an extremely important role in modern industrial production and environmental protection. The translation of this kind of scientific and technological texts has become a focus in the field of EST Translation,so it is of great significance to the translation practice of this kind of materials. This practice report is based on the translation practice of Chapter IV(excerpt)of the original English book Polymer Green Flame Retardants. This part is derived from“Environmental Drivers for Replacement of Halogenated Flame Retardants”,a research achievement completed by British and Swedish scholars.During translation, the author takes the Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical guidance,in the hope of interpreting the original information of the source text faithfully and accurately. The difficulties in this translation practice mainly focus on the processing of lexicon, syntax, text and style because of the particularities of scientific and technological texts. In the report, the author analyzes, using typical cases, the partial and complete equivalence of words, surface and deep equivalence of syntax, how to realize the cohesion of text, the structure of noun and the multi-frequent passive voices in style, and discusses how to further improve the translation after translation under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory to make the translation more natural and close to the source text.It is concluded that,at the lexical level, translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, amplification and omission can be chosen to make the translation more natural;at the syntactic level, the surface structure can be transformed into the deep layer, and the source text can be translated by means of syntax linearity, structure reforming, etc.so as to embody the deep information of the source text;at the text level, substitution, ellipsis and other methods can be chosen to make the translation concise and smooth;at the stylistic level, stylistic equivalence canbe achieved through conversion of the parts of speech, information reorganization, and etc.Through this translation practice,it can be concluded that the Functional Equivalence Theory plays an important guiding role in translating science and technology texts, and the translation under the guidance of this theory conforms to the function that science and technology texts center on “information” and “readers”.
