As one of the basic construction materials of language,vocabulary plays a crucial role in English learning,and mastering certain vocabulary is the foundation of learning English well.Especially for junior middle school,most students are at the beginning of English learning,the importance of vocabulary learning is self-evident.In addition,the school where the author teaches is located in the eastern Yunnan region.Most of the students in this region did not learn English in primary school and began to learn English in junior high school.For learners who are exposed to English for the first time,vocabulary is not only the basis for learning English well,but also determines students' interest in learning English in the future.However,in the teaching practice,the author finds that the current situation of English vocabulary teaching is not satisfactory.Most teachers use the traditional model in the vocabulary teaching,the vocabulary teaching is understood as "teaching students to read the words",teachers let students to memorize and understand the vocabulary after class.On the one hand,it leads to heavy after-class memory tasks and low vocabulary learning efficiency,which further affects the cultivation and development of students' interest in English learning.On the other hand,many students do not use words in specific contexts,even if they can remember their meanings.Vocabulary learning has become a difficult problem in English learning for many junior high school students.Therefore,it is of great significance to find an efficient vocabulary teaching method to improve the efficiency of vocabulary teaching in junior middle school.Situational teaching method combines boring language knowledge with realistic situations to make learning content more vivid and interesting.Applying it to vocabulary teaching in junior high school can improve teaching efficiency,promote the development of students' English learning ability and cultivate their interest in English learning.The author thinks it is the most suitable choice to apply situational teaching method to junior high school English vocabulary class.Based on the achievements of many scholars and experts,this paper expounds therelevant theories and current situation of vocabulary teaching.Also,this paper explores the relevant theoretical knowledge and research status of situational teaching method from the view of psychology,pedagogy,linguistics.On the basis of theoretical research,the author conducts experimental research by means of questionnaire survey,control test and interview,in order to explore the application significance of situational teaching method in vocabulary teaching in junior middle school.The subjects of this study are teachers from the English group of Qujing No.1Middle School Zhuoli Campus and students from grade 2 of the school.This study is divided into three processes,namely: questionnaire survey process,which is used to explore the current situation of English vocabulary teaching and learning in our school;control experiment to explore the effect of situational teaching method on vocabulary teaching;interview survey,which is used to find out whether the students' attitude towards vocabulary learning had changed.The results show the current situation of English vocabulary teaching and learning in east Yunnan province,and further prove that applying situational approach to vocabulary teaching can improve students' vocabulary learning efficiency,vocabulary application ability,interest and confidence in English learning,thus significantly improving vocabulary teaching efficiency.This study can provide feasible vocabulary teaching suggestions and strategies for English teachers in junior middle schools.
