Scant Translator-Behavior-Criticism Of Ning Sun In Political Conference Interpreting

On an annual basis,China's National “Two Sessions” press conferences draw researchers' attention to the study of interpreting that comes along.Yet,research mostly engages in interpreting strategies and skills,and rarely relates to the interpreter that produces the interpreting(Translat(1)).Within the framework of translator behavior criticism,this thesis aims to analyze the interpreting behavior of Ning Sun,a recognized interpreter dedicated to interpreting practices on national political occasions.Through investigating his over-the-ten-year interpreting delivery on press conferences from 2010 to 2019,the present research is about to answer the following three questions:1)What are the features of Ning Sun's interpreting style behavior? What can be inferred from relevant indicators?2)What are the features of Ning Sun's interpreting delivery behavior? How does his delivery distribute on the continuum of “Truth-seeking – Utility-attaining” model?3)What are the external causes of Ning Sun's interpreter style and delivery behavior?With the help of corpus analysis tools,a holistic approach is taken to investigate the style behavior by comparing the Translat with the US press conference discourse to highlight Ning Sun's interpreting characteristics.Then,a narrower view into the interpreting units on the truth-seeking – utility-attaining continuum is made to identify how exactly the delivery is distributed.Finally,external factors contributing to the formation of Ning Sun's interpreting behavior is summarized based on relevant information.It is found:1)Compared with native English speakers on press conferences,Ning Sun uses a broader range of vocabulary,more complicated words,more nouns,and longer sentences.He delivers a smooth interpreting Translat,yet he also has a tendency to deliver a highly formal and complicated output,which is likely to undermine public acceptance.2)Based on the interpreting units,Ning Sun's Translat has a high degree of rationality concerning the output,which not only preserves the original flavor but also meets the practical needs of target audiences.Proper truth-seeking interpreting is employed in understandable Chinese expressions,semi-truth-seeking & semi-utilityattaining interpreting in ambiguous Chinese expressions,and utility-attaining interpreting in non-understandable Chinese expressions.In addition,Ning Sun has a tendency to produce truth-seeking output instead of the utility-attaining delivery,which is different from the general Translation pattern of “truth-seeking being the basis but utility-attaining taking the priority”.3)Ning Sun's interpreting behavior is shaped by several external factors.His social profession as a diplomatic interpreter plays a defining role,which prompts him to pursue truth-seeking Translat more,and deliver highly formal output.His audienceoriented consciousness,on the other hand,encourages him to have a utility-attaining Translat.Besides,translation influence also makes significant impact on his output for truth-seeking purpose,and him producing a more complicated Translat with written language style.With the analysis of Ning Sun's interpreting behavior,this thesis helps broaden up the research scope of the translator behavior criticism from mere translation dimension to interpreting perspective.In addition,the study is also of significance to help interpreters build a coordinated relation between the source language and target audiences,and better utter “Chinese voice” to the world.
