A Report On The Liaison Interpreting For China-Israel Investment Conference

The cooperative principle(CP)was put forward by Grice,a philosopher of language.According to him,people engaging in communication would obey this principle subconsciously or unconsciously to facilitate understanding.As is known to all,interpreting also falls into the category of communication.During interpreting,interpreters transform the message from one language form into another through oral interpretation.Therefore,the cooperative principle can also be applied to guide the interpreting practice,and it is essential for interpreters to help establish certain cooperative relationship between the speaker and the listener using this principle.As a special form of interpreting,liaison interpreting requires interpreters to assume a more helpful role in facilitating communication.In this connection,applying the CP in liaison interpreting could better help interpreters achieve communicative goals.Based on an interpreting practice by the author on the business matchmaking session of the China-Israel Investment Conference,this report analyzes cases in which the cooperative principle was obeyed or disobeyed.In this report,it is discovered that liaison interpreters still obey maxims of the CP in one way or another.In the same vein,disobedience also occurs in order to facilitate communication,with the quantity maxim most likely to be breached.Guided by the CP,the interpreter adopted appropriate strategies to achieve effective communication.However,the quality maxim shall always be observed to guarantee the quality of the interpreting.
