A Study Of Timothy Tingfang Lew's Literary Activities

In recent years,the unique position of the Yenching University in the ecclesiastical universities has attracted more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad.In just 33 years of running the Yenching University,a large number of people have emerged in various fields of outstanding achievements,just in literature,there are Zhou Zuoren,Bing Xin,Xu Dishan,Guo Shaoyu,Wu Leichuan and so on.Although the research achievements of Yenching University are not lack,in the process of sorting out the literature,the author found Timothy Tingfang Lew,once known as one of the "three masters of Yenching University",but not enough attention to the scholars.As John Leighton Stuart's most effective assistant at the beginning of the school,he not only built the Yenching University into the best religious college in the north in a short period of time,but also found professors and started a campus magazine,Yenching University had been campaigning to improve the quality of its schools and its social reputation.In addition,he had made outstanding contributions to the protestant reformation,poetry,psychology and social movements.Timothy Tingfang Lew wrote a lot in his life,but his main literary activities were concentrated in his teaching period in Yenching University(1920-1936),so this paper limits this scope as a research period.In this thesis,Timothy Tingfang Lew's literary activities in Yenching University are chosen as the research subject,and through the excavation and reappearance of historical materials,literature research is taken as the center.the purpose of this paper is to probe into the literary activities of Timothy Tingfang Lew,such as the establishment of a magazine,the translation of hymns,the creation of new poems,the translation of Kahlil Gibran's works,and the intercourse with modern writers.Explore the activity,hoping to play a role in intriguing the study of Timothy Tingfang Lew's life.This thesis is divided into four parts:The first part is Western learning: Timothy Tingfang Lew in the the movement of "true qualities " of Christianity of the magazine editing.This paper mainly discusses Timothy Tingfang Lew's "Life Monthly" and "Amethyst" magazine,and makes a brief analysis of his efforts to reform Christianity in different historical environments.The second part is the nationalization of saint music: The compilation of the Hymns "Hymns of Universal Praise".Starting with the publication process of "Hymns of Universal Praise",this chapter first explores Timothy Tingfang Lew's contribution to the completion of "Hymns of Universal Praise",and then analyzes Timothy Tingfang Lew's hymns,with a view to poetry collection and contributions to two aspects of Timothy Tingfang Lew's "Saint Music Nationalization" efforts.In the third part,the same amplitude vibration: Poetry and translation creation under the new literature atmosphere.First of all,I appreciate Timothy Tingfang Lew's Poetry Collection "Shan Yu",and explore its literary value,and then make a brief introduction to his translation of Kahlil Gibran's poetry collection,the author also makes an analysis of Timothy Tingfang Lew's mastery and translation of "Biblical style" in Kahlil Gibran's works with a view to reflecting his literary contribution in both new poetry writing and prose poetry translation.The fourth part,literary friendship: Timothy Tingfang Lew and modern writers.Starting with his literary intercourse with Xu Zhimo,Hu Shi,Bing Xin,T.C.Chao and other modern writers,this paper identifies his unique literary identity and contributes more abundant literary historical materials to his literary activities.The appendix part collates and presents the materials of Timothy Tingfang Lew's literary activities,in accordance with the writing order of the thesis,lists are made of Timothy Tingfang Lew's articles in "Life Monthly",Timothy Tingfang Lew's articles in "Life Monthly",Timothy Tingfang Lew's articles in "Amethyst",Timothy Tingfang Lew's hymns translated and created in "Hymns of Universal Praise",the contents of "Fengmanlou Series" and the catalogue of "Shan Yu",for reference by other scholars.
