Without reading, there is no learning.Reading is an important means for people to acquire knowledge. As far as language learning is concerned, reading is the basis of the other three skills—listening, speaking and writing--and good reading ability is helpful for students to master a language. At the same time, with the development of society,English becomes more and more important, and the society has higher requirements for people's mastery of English. Therefore, reading,as an important way to study English, its importance is self-evident.Besides,English reading occupies a comparatively large part in various kinds of English exams.Nevertheless, the current situation of students' English reading learning is not satisfactory. They have no confidence in English reading learning and do not like English reading. Some students even have a sense of fear for English reading learning. In order to change this situation, many new teaching modes are put forward, and stratified teaching mode is one of them.Since stratified teaching mode was introduced to teaching,it has been mainly applied in junior school and primary school.Even if it was used in high school, most of the studies are theoretical. Therefore, this thesis is going to conduct a teaching experiment, whose purpose is to change students' negative attitudes towards English reading,to improve students' English reading ability,to help them develop good English reading habits and to improve their English reading skills by adopting stratified teaching mode.Through this empirical study, the author intends to answer the following three questions:(1)What effect does stratified teaching mode have on high school students' attitudes towards English reading learning?(2)What is the impact of stratified teaching mode on high school students' English reading ability?(3)How can stratified teaching mode be applied to high school English reading teaching effectively? In this study,100 high school students in Middle School Affiliated to Henan University are selected as the experimental subjects. They are divided into two classes, experimental class(EC)and control class(CC).There are 50 students in both classes.During the teaching experiment, the students need to finish three questionnaires(questionnaire A and questionnaire B,questionnaire A is used twice: Before and after the experiment, questionnaire A is conducted in the two classes.)and two sets of test papers(Pre-test and Post-test).Before the experiment, the students take a pre-test,the purpose of which is to make sure whether there is no significant difference in English reading level between the students in EC and CC.Then the author begins a four-month teaching experiment.Stratified teaching mode is adopted in EC and traditional English reading teaching mode is adopted in CC.After the teaching experiment, the author collects and analyzes the experimental data with the help of the SPSS20.0.The results show that stratified teaching mode can change students' negative attitudes towards English reading and improve their deductive ability and summarizing ability in English reading. In addition, through this experiment, the author also puts forward some suggestions for the application of stratified teaching mode to high school English reading teaching in the future. This thesis is made up of six chapters: The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly illustrates research background, research significance, research questions, research methods and the structure of the thesis.Chapter two is literature review, which mainly reviews previous studies on applying stratified teaching mode to English reading teaching in primary school, middle school and high school. The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis and related concepts of stratified teaching mode, and puts forward stratified English reading teaching mode.Chapter four introduces the specific design of the experiment, including research hypotheses, research subjects, research instruments, research procedure and a sample lesson in EC.Chapter five is analysis and discussion of the results of the experiment.Chapter six is the conclusion.
