The overseas Chinese have always attached great importance to cultural and educational undertakings.The development of the Chinese language and culture education is an important activity of the ethnic Chinese society in Vietnam.Since ancient times,Vietnam has been deeply influenced by the Chinese culture,which is an inherent advantage in the generation and development of the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam.At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam as an alien education was accompanied by a large number of Chinese immigrants entering Vietnam to make a living.In 1937,the outbreak of China's Anti-Japanese war caused many Chinese cultural and educational personages to seek refuge in Vietnam.They worked together with the local ethnic Chinese and overseas Chinese to set up a large number of language and culture schools.,and the level of running schools is also increasing.This period is also the peak period of the Chinese language and culture education development in Vietnam.After 1954,Vietnam was divided into the Republic of Vietnam(South Vietnam)and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam(North Vietnam).Due to ideological and diplomatic considerations,the governments of the North and South began to suppress and assimilate Chinese education by different means,and Chinese education began to decline.After the restoration of reunification in 1975,the Vietnamese government vigorously carried out the anti-Chinese movement,and Chinese education almost stagnated.In 1986,the Vietnamese government carried out the policy of Renovation and Opening up,which is an opportunity for the rebirth of the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam,but its connotation has changed completely.In essence,the Chinese language and culture education in contemporary Vietnam has been transformed into a foreign language education.The rise of the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam is not only influenced by the historical tradition of respecting Confucianism in Vietnam,but also the product of the prosperity and development of modern Overseas Chinese economy and Overseas Chinese communities.Although the French colonial government set restrictions on it everywhere,they never banned it and created a relatively loose political environment for the development of the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam.The early Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam took the Old-Style Private Schools as the carrier,and then influenced by the establishment of modern schools by the French colonial government,Vietnamese Overseas Chinese also successively established formal Chinese language and culture school education,the purpose of which is to maintain the Chinese characteristics of Vietnamese overseas Chinese children.Therefore,the Chinese language and culture education in this period is a kind of mother tongue education.After that,the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam experienced a process from rise to prosperity,from prosperity to decline,and then revived again.This development is closely related to the economic status of Ethnic Chinese,the attitude of Vietnamese government towards the Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam and the evolution of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam.In order to adapt to the current situation of Vietnam,the contemporary Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam has been transformed into a foreign language education.In the future,with the in-depth development of trade between China and Vietnam,the Vietnamese government will continue to support the development of the Chinese language and culture education for the sake of economic interests.Therefore,the development prospect of Chinese education in Vietnam is relatively optimistic.The Chinese language and culture education in Vietnam is an important part of the history of Vietnamese overseas Chinese.The evolution of its history and current situation reflects the historical change of the status of Vietnamese overseas Chinese from the perspective of culture and education,indirectly shows the tortuous history of the development of Southeast Asian Chinese social culture,and is an important reference for the study of Sino Vietnamese cultural exchanges and Sino Vietnamese relations.
