The Musical Style And Research On Playing Technique Of Gargoyles By Lowell Liebermann

The piano suite “Gargoyles” written by Lowell Liebermann is different from the traditional piano suite.In composing techniques,the composer is based on the common creative techniques of Modern and integrate the musical elements of Classical Romantic period.The crisscross of harmony color and melody-line seems to make people feel in strange and absurd situations.This piano suite is composed of four piano pieces.It is a new piano divertimento with independent titles and has different musical structure,musical mood and performance methods.With the title of "grotesque stone carvings" as the center,the music thoughts are scattered in the strength changes,dynamics changes,harmony changes,key touching methods and sound effects of the four piano pieces.It not only highlights the grotesque features of stone carvings,but also depicts the state of raindrops in the middle of the night,which makes the originally exaggerated and seemingly atonal music matchless to the title set by the composer.This paper makes a preliminary study on the musical style and performance of this piano divertimento by consulting relevant materials,practicing performance and guidance of the tutor.The full text starts from three aspects,i.e.a brief introduction of the background of the creation of "strange stone carvings" and a research and exploration from the tonality,harmony and rhythm of the four movements.The research on the performance skills of "Strange Stone Carvings" and the author's understanding,practice and discussion of this work will enhance the author's deeper understanding and perception of this work.Through combing and analyzing the style,structure and performance of the work,the whole work will be more vivid and vivid,and it will strive to be closer to the composer's original creation,restore the meaning and value of music itself to the greatest extent,and accumulate experience for future study and research in modernist works.
