A Report On Simulated Interpreting Of The AI Race

With the rapid development of science and technology,artificial intelligence has penetrated into all aspects of human lives,and it has become a hot topic in the interpretation market.Taking the documentary the AI Race as the material,the author carries out the simulated interpreting practice,which includes three stages: pre-interpreting preparation,simulated interpreting and post-interpreting analysis.Guided by Li Changshuan's four-dimensional analysis framework UMEER(Understanding,Memorizing,Expressing and Emergency response),the author analyzes the recorded material of her interpretation,summarizes the highlights and problems encountered in the interpreting process,and puts forward corresponding solutions.As for “understanding”,the biggest problems are lack of background knowledge and unfamiliarity with technical terms.To solve these problems,the interpreter needs to improve listening capability and expand the depth and breadth of pre-interpreting preparation.For “memorizing”,the obstacle lies in failing to grasp the logic line and failing to take systematic notes.To solve these problems,the interpreter is required to improve her short-term memory by getting the speaker's logic line and to grasp and apply a systematic note-taking method.In terms of “expression”,redundancy,inaccuracy and ineffectiveness in communication are common problems.The interpreter needs to integrate repeated information flexibly to meet the principle of conciseness,to transform the original sentence structure to achieve the principle of accuracy and to add background knowledge to effectively express the original meaning.Main problems in “emergency” arise from poorly-organized expression in the source language and too fast speech speed with unfamiliar accent.The interpreter should keep calm and predict reasonably in the face of emergency so as to ensure a smooth and complete interpreting process.Through this simulated interpreting practice,the author not only has a better command of the AI-themed interpretation,but also has a deeper understanding of the application of the UMEER framework in reflecting on the interpreting process.Finally,the author summarizes the experience in this practice,hoping to provide an effective reference and inspiration for future learning.
