As of 2018,153 higher educational institutions in China established undergraduate,Master and Doctoral programs in French, among which more than 10 have Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI)program in French.According to the China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education, the goal of MTI is to "cultivate high-level,applied and professional translators and interpreters that meet the needs of national economic, cultural and social construction." Therefore, promoting vocationaloriented training of MTI postgraduates has always been one of the hottest topics in these higher institutions. Most MTI professors and postgraduates, however,do not know very well about translation job markets, let alone the changing job requirements.Hence, the author believes it is very urgent to conduct an in-depth research on the demand for professional French translators and interpreters. The purpose of this paper is to examine job requirements of French translators and interpreters in Shanghai. The problem remains to be solved in this paper is Shanghai's market requirements of graduates' capabilities of French MTI.The recruitment information the author used in the paper was from online job platforms: 51 job and Zhaopin and the author then used SPSS statistical software to give a descriptive analysis of market expectations of French translators and interpreters in Shanghai and tried to summarize employers' main job requirements.By conducting the survey, the author found that the current market for French Translation and Interpreting is in a rather small scale and the companies in the market do not fully know what French Translation and Interpreting is while keeping raising their expectations of graduates in this field. The research shows that companies' preferential types of translation and interpreting graduates are as follows: interdisciplinary talents,vocation-oriented talents and international talents. They pay more attention to the work experience and subjective abilities of French interpreters, such as communicative ability and collaborative ability. The author hopes that this paper will help higher institutions, professors and students from French Translation and Interpreting to better understand the features of the job market, and also help students get well prepared before employment so that they can be competitive in their future career. In addition, this paper also aims to provide data and cases for professionals in this research area for future reference.
