English as a Lingua Franca(ELF)is defined as the "contact language" between people of different language and cultural backgrounds and for whom English is chosen as a means of communication. It is a collection of the Englishes used during the cross-cultural communication of non-native English speakers.Unlike the traditional notion of English as a Foreign Language(EFL),ELF has no fixed standards for English use.Any localization of English, whether it be from countries of the inner, outer or expanding circle,is treated with equal amount rights. This report is based on the interpreting experience in a context of ELF in which the author worked as an interpreter for the Marche Region Delegation's visit to Shandong Province. It firstly describes the interpreting task, including pre-task preparation and in-task interpretation. Then it introduces the definition, development, features of ELF and its comparison with the similar notion of World Englishes.Based on the challenges that the interpreter met in the process of interpretation, this report discusses the major requirements for interpreters in the context of ELF.When faced with challenges like the lack of shared background knowledge, strong foreign accent, and culture-loaded words, the interpreters are suggested to overcome such difficulties by having tolerant attitude, multicultural outlook, multilingual proficiency,cross-cultural communication skills and powerful mentality. This report finally describes the feedback from the client, discusses the interpreter's self-reflection and put forward some suggestions for the training of interpreters.
