An E-C Translation Report On The Application Of The Division Method In Biography

As one kind of the common literary forms,the biography is to recall and record writer's life stories with his memories.The selected text is a literary biography.Some emotions,mental activities or imaginations of the original writer are also recorded during the process of describing the main events in the biography.But unlike the novel,biography is generally not fictional,because documentary character is the basic requirement to biography.The original writer writes down her own life in the selection,so the selected text is the autobiography of literature.Studying and translating foreign autobiography is of great help to understand foreign ideas and promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.The translation report is based on Once I Was A Princess: A Mother's Worst Nightmare from chapter one to chapter sixteen written by Jacqueline Pascarl in Australia.The excerpts of this book mainly describe the suffering of the author's growth,the unfortunate marriage of her mother and grandmother,and the early emotional life of the author,which cause the author's psychological malformation to marriage.On the one hand,translating his book can make readers understand the impact of unfortunate childhood experiences and parental marriage on children's psychology.On the other hand,it can also compare Chinese biographies with English biographies,which can promote the development of Chinese biography to a certain extent.In the translation between English and Chinese,the handling of complex and long sentences is a difficult point,which is very common in translation studies and is highly concerned by translators.This translation report introduced the translation task,the features of the original languages,the process of translation,and mainly concentrated on case analysis in detail.The translator finished the translation task with the guidance of functional equivalence,aiming to deal with the complex and long sentences in source text.Then the translator used some cases to analyze the application of the division method in the translation of complex and long sentences.The detailed introduction to the method of division,how to split,and the use of division method in the translation make the complex and long sentences of English reachthe functional equivalence with the translation.In the summary the translation strategies,section of the translation report,the author summarized the problems encountered in the translation practice and the expected results achieved.With this translation report,the author hopes to provide some references for translations of Chinese and foreign biography.
