This report is based on the E-C translation of the second chapter of The Queen Mother by William Shawcross.The text consists of 24 chapters,and the second chapter is about 24,000 words,which introduces in detail the Queen Elizabeth’s life experience of study,growth and rescue of the wounded during the First World War(1914-1918).This text is a kind of biographical literature,which is a literary genre that uses a variety of literary and artistic techniques except fabrication to reproduce the life experience and deeds of characters,showing their spiritual outlook.It is of authenticity and literariness.The translation practice can be effectively guided by Jin Di’s equivalent effect theory.The author illustrates the methods used in translation from the perspectives of words,sentences and style.In terms of words,the author mainly adopts methods of naming according to the owners,adopting the established popular translated names and transliteration.In terms of sentences,to better achieve equivalence in translation,the author discusses a variety of translation methods for passive sentences,attributive clauses and long and complicated sentences.First,dealing with passive sentences,the author changes it into active sentences in Chinese and uses the methods of adding and subject conversion at the same time.Second,as for the attributive clause,the author uses the methods of preposition and postposition.Last,order,reverse order,division and integration can be applied in the translation of long and complicated sentences.In terms of style,the author follows the strategy of "faithfulness","expressiveness" and "aroma" to analyze poetry translation,giving priority to literal translation and treating free translation as secondary,to maintain the aroma of poetry translation under the requirement of expressiveness.Based on the above translation practice,it is concluded that Jin Di’s equivalent principle can better demonstrate the authenticity and literariness of biographical texts in translation.In combination with the author’s own translation practice,this report explores the translation methods of biographical text translation,hoping to make some contribution to the future study of Queen Elizabeth,the Queen Mother. |
