A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Australian Economy(Chapter5)

This report is based on the translation practice of the fifth chapter of The Australian Economy.The book focuses on the profile,history and development prospect of Australia's economy,and the fifth chapter elaborates on Australia's international trade which mainly includes Australia's balance of payments accounts,external debt,debate on the external debt and current trade policy.As an economic text,its main function is to transmit information with specialization,preciseness and objectiveness as the main features.Taking the function and characteristics of the source text into consideration,the translator chooses the Functional Equivalence Theory as guidance,and strives for the equivalence in lexis,syntax and discourse.At the level of lexical equivalence,for solving the problem of complexity of economic terms,the translator chooses the technical terms in accordance with the specific context so as to achieve the standardization of translated terms.At the level of syntactical equivalence,the problems lie in the different sentence focuses of English and Chinese,and the frequent use of passive voice and long and complex sentences.These problems are solved through the application of various translation techniques,such as inversion,the change of the voice,splitting and restructuring.At the level of discoursal equivalence,the translator adopts flexible coherence and cohesive devices to reproduce the discoursal feature of the source text.The translator summarizes the experience and limitations of this translation project,hoping that this can provide some references for the future translation of the economic texts.
