| Given the stringent standards of simultaneous interpretation,interpreters are frequently under extreme stress and intense cognitive workload.In some international conferences and exchange events held in China,speakers often organize their speeches on the spot,making it difficult for interpreters to predict the content.Since Chinese impromptu speeches are often delivered at fast speed,interpreters may struggle to keep pace and deliver the intended core messages accurately.Under such intense pressure,interpreters can actively adopt some efficiency skills to relieve their cognitive burden and to improve performance.Through this paper’s research,the author hopes to provide references for teachings and practices of C-E simultaneous interpreting.With Daniel Gile’s Effort Model as the theoretical framework,the author hopes to probe into the effects and applications of efficiency skills.In the paper,the author hopes to examine how the application of efficiency skills could help interpreters distribute energy in a more reasonable way,reduce information losses,enhance output coherence and content integrity,thus improving the overall quality.The paper presents a literature review on Gile’s Effort Model and efficiency skills and further categorizes them into omission,generalization and simplification,which serves as the theoretic foundation for this research.The author also conducted an empirical study with eight student interpreters as experimental subjects.Through quantitative analysis and textual analysis of their simultaneous interpreting,the author summarizes the effects of adopting efficiency skills.Through the experiment,the author draws the following conclusion:for Chinese to English impromptu simultaneous interpreting,employing efficiency skills in a reasonable way could greatly enhance the output.In actual application,omission,generalization,and simplification are the three most common employed skills.. |
