| This practice report is based on a simulated E-C simultaneous interpreting, with material excerpted from the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference opening ceremony. After the simulation practice, the author listed the failures in the practice, and analyzed the causes, and concluded that the imbalance of energy allocation is the main reason for the failures. Therefore, the author opted for the Effort Model as the theoretical framework of the report.Subsequently, the author classified failures as loss of information, filled pauses, inappropriate expressions, ambiguous logic and information redundancy.According to the four stages of the Effort Model, the author argues that fast speech speed of the speaker could cause energy in listening and analysis and short-term memory overload, resulting in loss of information. And the speaker’s repeated self-corrections leads to the difficulty in balancing the production and coordination part, resulting in incoherent interpretation in the form of filled pauses. The speaker’s use of too many parentheses brings great challenges to the interpreter in listening and analysis,short-term memory, production and coordination, demonstrated by word by word interpretation and inauthentic expressions. In addition, the author does not properly deal with the speaker’s ambiguous logic and redundancy, which affects the quality of the interpretation. Therefore,in order to solve the problems, three coping strategies are put forward,i.e.omission,generalization and simplification. This report is a reflection of the author, aiming to provide reference for herself and other student interpreters to improve interpreting skill. |
