A Report On The Translation Of Chapter One From Beautiful Henan

Beautiful Henan is one of the Beautiful China Series,which are popular books of geography and culture jointly complied by Geographic Society of China(GSC)and local geographic societies at all levels.The book is beautifully written and graphically depicts the natural landscape,places of historical interest and cultural heritage in Henan,presenting its beauty with strong ancient charm.Since no English version of Beautiful Henan has been found,the first chapter was chosen and translated from Chinese to English to contribute to building an information platform for foreign readers and to provide them with an overall introduction of Henan province.Given publicity-oriented purpose,the Skopos Theory was adopted to guide the translation.During the process,the integrity and readability of the original information was put first,while the language features and cultural connotation of the text were also given consideration as much as possible.The study of C-E translation of Beautiful Henan is approached from the perspective of Functionalist Skopos Theory of Translation.Firstly,the Functionalist Skopos Theory is reviewed.Then the Three Principles of Skopos Theory,namely Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule,are adopted to collaboratively guide the translation process.After that,translation difficulties with examples are analyzed from the perspective of proper nouns,culture-loaded words,poetry and rhetorical devices.During the process,the following translation methods have been frequently used: transliteration,annotation,free translation,omission,etc.Finally,a summary is made to point out that the accurate interpretation of the cultural connotation as well as the language proficiency and translation techniques of the translator should work together to promote Chinese culture going global.
