In the translation practice of official style reports such as international organization reports, there is a common problem puzzling translators. It is not difficult to understand the original text, but it is a demanding task to accurately translate the meaning of the original and maintain the formality of the official language style.Especially in many cases, the translator faces familiar words, but the commonly known dictionary meaning cannot fully satisfy the needs of translation.Theory of Adaptation put forward by Verschueren in 1999 can guide a way to solve this problem.According to Verschueren, the adaptability of language is reflected in four aspects, and contextual correlates of adaptability is one of them. This thesis analyzes the vocabulary translation of EFA Global Education Monitoring Report-Gender Review 2016 under the guidance of contextual correlates of adaptability. This review is an annual global education report focusing on gender gap released by UNESCO,which is authoritative and has the language features and stylistic features of the official report. In the process of translation, through literature research and case study, the author follows the principles of adapting to the communicative context and linguistic context, and adjusts the meaning and property of the word. Finally, the following four vocabulary translation methods are obtained: 1)multi-translation of one word;2)extension of word meaning;3)verb transformation;4)combined use of two or three methods. This research is of theoretical and practical significance: it clears up the guiding function of the perspective of contextual correlates of adaptability to the studies on vocabulary translation and gives some advice to the translators who work on the translation of international official reports and other official texts. |
