This report is based on the translation practice of the three chapters from Secret Worlds: The Extraordinary Senses of Animals. As a popular science text about sensory systems in nature,it involves terminologies and principles in the field of biology, physics, and chemistry, and the language is objective and rigorous.Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory values contextual correlates, based on which proper language choices and dynamic adaptation are made.Since it is a text about biological knowledge, the source text can be translated under the guidance of Adaptation Theory to deal with translation issues in the biological context, and specific translation strategies are adopted flexibly to solve the difficulties the translator faces. To solve difficulties in the translation such as the selection of words with professional and contextual meanings, the realization of textual cohesion, and the translation of complex sentences, the translator adopts specific techniques in the light of Adaptation Theory. In terms of contextual correlates of adaptation, techniques including annotation, ellipsis, repetition, and order change are used in communicative context and linguistic context. As for structural objects of adaptability, voice conversion, addition, conversion of parts of speech, and unit shift are employed at the lexical and syntactic levels. In the angle of the salience of adaptation processes, the techniques of segmentation, order change, amplification, and idiomatic translation are adopted from the aspects of passive and active adaptation. This report aims to explore the applicability of Adaptation Theory to the translation of the natural science text. |
