| This paper is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Global Pandemics and Epistemic Crises in Psychology(Excerpts). This book is a collection of articles written by some leading scholars, who examine the concept of “crisis” and its implications on the psychological field in the context of the epidemic. It focuses on the challenges in understanding social issues such as gender, race, class, history, and culture through lived experiences. The source text of the translation is Chapter 2,Crisis and Relationality, which explores the topic of crisis and association from the perspectives of crisis and uncertainty, liminal experiences and the interpersonal relationship.Lexically, the ST contains abundant psychological terms, polysemes and words with unfamiliar meanings.Syntactically,as the ST is an informative text, its syntactical structures are comparatively intricate with prodigious amounts of information. To overcome the challenges in translating, the translator has chosen Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as a guiding theoretical framework.Vershueren holds that language use is characterized by variability, negotiability and adaptability.Based on the adaptability,he proposes four dimensions of linguistic option: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and salience. Therefore, the translator utilizes the translation methods, including addition, omission, and transformation,to adapt the target text in these four dimensions. The translation practice proves that Verschueren’s theory is applicable in guiding the rendering of the lexical, syntactical and contextual relations as well as the stylistic characteristics of the ST. |
