Being one of the projects of The National Social Science Fund of China,Chinese academic translation project aims to present the academic achievements of Chinese scholars to the world and enhance China’s cultural soft power.Since its establishment, many Chinese academic works have gone abroad in foreign languages. This report is based on the author’s practice in the translation project of Jusup Mamay,Master Performer of the Kirghiz Manas Epic: A Critical Biography, which makes a comprehensive and systematic review of the most famous Manas performer’s life and his great contribution to epic inheritance. The English translation of this critical biography is to introduce the outstanding performer and spread Chinese epic Manas to the world. The report sorts out the difficulties encountered by the author in the translation process, mainly at the lexical and syntactic level,including:(1)deficiency of cultural information;(2)mistranslation;(3)inaccurate translation of sentences.According to previous studies on biographical translation, biography has both expressive and informative functions. As the critical biography has basic features of biography,at the same time enjoys a stronger academic nature, the informative function should be dominant.Newmark believes that informative text should adopt communicative translation. In view of that, the author mainly applies methods of annotation, free translation, subject shift and division to solve the above difficulties,so that the translation can fully convey information and conform to the reading and cognitive habits of target readers. This report is expected to provide some reference for translators who will translate biography or critical biography in the future.
