| The source text of the translation practice report is chosen from the second chapter of Biography of He Jingming written by Han Wengen,a writer from Xinyang.The biography mainly tells the story of the well-known historical and cultural celebrity He Jingming in Ming Dynasty.In all his life He Jingming is loyal to the country and the people,putting the interest of the country and the people first and hardly considering his own profit.In terms of writing style,he advocates reform.With regard to education,he attaches importance to education and reforms its shortcomings.He Jingming’s whole life shows his noble personality and quality,which is worth learning for us.Therefore a chapter of the biography was chosen as the source text of the translation practice.The translation practice is under the guidance of Text Typology Theory of Newmark,a famous translation theorist.Newmark considers that texts have different functions in communication,mainly including expressive function,informative function and vocative function.Different text functions correspond to different text types and different text types should be translated with different translation strategies.It requires the author to adopt whether semantic translation faithful to the original author or communicative translation faithful to the target language readers.As a biography,the source text is mainly an expressive text but some paragraphs have the feature of informative text.Therefore in the process of translation,the strategy of semantic translation faithful to the original author should be adopted preferentially.However,in order to make the target language readers have a better understanding of the translation,communicative translation strategy should also be partly adopted.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Theory of Text Typology,the author uses different translation strategies and methods to analyze the cases of culture-loaded words,Chinese four-character idioms,sentences in classical Chinese texts,long and complex sentences,run-on sentences,cohesion and coherence from lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The author endeavors to make the translation not only faithful to the original author but also accessible to the target language readers.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Theory of Text Typology,the translation practice attempts to solve problems in C-E translation of biographical texts with semantic translation and communicative translation strategies.Newmark’s Theory of Text Typology can effectively guide the translator to adopt appropriate translation strategies and methods according to the features of the source text.Therefore the translation is not just faithful to the original author but accessible to the target language readers.The translation practice accumulates translation experience for the translator. |
