An Action Research On Improving English Dialogue Teaching In Rural Primary School

The main purpose of English teaching in primary schools is to enable students to acquire the ability of communication in English.Dialogue teaching accounts for a large proportion of the PEP primary English books currently in use.Therefore,dialogue teaching is very important in the whole learning process.The school where the author works is a rural primary school in Tankou Town,Ganzhou City.The students taught are fifth-grade students.In the dialogue teaching,the author found that the students did not actively participate in the classroom activities,the students’ participation in the classroom was low,and they are generally unwilling to speak English or answer questions.Based on the actual situation of students,this paper tries to explore the following three questions:(1)What is the reason for the low participation of students in dialogue class?(2)What is the reason for the low output of students’ spoken English? And how to solve it?(3)What are the effective strategies to improve English dialogue teaching in primary school?Through the questionnaire survey,the author found that the reason why students are reluctant to participate in dialogue teaching activities is that students are shy and lack confidence in speaking English,and the teacher’s classroom activities are not designed properly.Therefore,the author took 102 students and dialogue teaching activities of the class as the research objects and carried out a three-round action research,focusing on how to effectively carry out dialogue teaching.In the first round of dialogue teaching action research,students were helped to improve their self-confidence mainly through the teacher’s encouraging language and created an environment that is conducive to students’ English speaking.In the second round of action research,the method of optimizing classroom activities was mainly adopted to improve the participation of the dialogue class.The third round of action research was based on the reflection of the previous two rounds of research,by using task-based teaching method to optimize the design of classroom activities,in order to achieve theeffective development of dialogue teaching.The results of the study showed that after the implementation of the action study,the students increased their confidence in speaking English.Most of the students were able to actively speak in the classroom,and the participation in the classroom was significantly improved.It is concluded that teacher’s encouraging language and competition mechanisms can help students to improve their confidence in learning English and to stimulate students’ interest in learning English;Dialogue teaching using task-based teaching method can increase the output of students’ language,which is an effective teaching method.
