| As the English teaching in primary schools in rural areas of Renhuai City is restricted by various restrictions of adverse conditions,students normally have a weak English foundation,are not interested in English learning,and even have rubs in reading basic words.Students do not know how to read but they are not willing to ask for help from classmates or teachers either.Therefore,most of the students even fail to pass the English tests.In addition,a major hallmark of primary school English textbooks is dialogues,which requires cooperation among students to practice dialogues,but students lack the awareness and ability of cooperation,teachers in the teaching process also ignore the use of appropriate teaching methods to direct teaching.For the sake of finding out the reasons for the poor academic performance of students in rural areas,so that the author could take effective initiatives to improve and perfect the primary school English teaching in rural areas,and ultimately enhance the English academic performance of pupils in rural.This study argues that low levels of class participation are the cause of rural students’ poor academic performance.Based on the theory of cooperative group learning,this study explores whether cooperative group learning can enhance students’ class participation and ultimately improve their academic performance.Specifically,this study is designed to solve the following two problems:(1)What is the class participation of students in English class at XX primary school?(2)How can the teacher improve students’ class participation and academic performance through cooperative group learning?In order to answer the two research questions posed by the author,the author applied cooperative group learning to the teaching of English to students in Class 5(1)at XX Primary School.Action research was carried out in the teaching,using research tools such as questionnaires,interviews,classroom observations,teaching journals and the application of Excel to analyse the data in the course of the study.The author found out that before using cooperative group learning to organize teaching,students’ class participation degrees were relatively low and their academic performance was also poor.However,with the use of cooperative group learning,students’ class participation and academic performance were improved. |
