New English curriculum reform emphasizes that teachers should pay attention to students’ subject consciousness,and improve their English learning ability as well as application ability.As a language,the process of learning English requires the participation and communication of learners.However,in the current senior high school English teaching,students seldom participate in class,and the phenomenon of classroom silence is very common,which is not conducive to the improvement of students’ comprehensive ability and teachers’ teaching.Many scholars at home and abroad have made relevant studies on English classroom silence.However,most of the research objects are international students and college students,and there are few researches on English classroom silence in senior high school.Grade one of senior high school is the basic grade in senior high school.Therefore,the research on the phenomenon of English classroom silence in senior high school grade one can find out the causes that hinder senior high school students from participating in the class from the root,so as to explore the strategies to break the silence and create an active classroom atmosphere.Under the guidance of Affective Filter Hypothesis,Interaction Hypothesis Theory and Input and Output Theory,this research investigated 191 students and 3English teachers in GX Senior High School grade one by means of classroom observation,questionnaire and interview,aiming to explore three issues:1.What is the current status of silence in senior high school grade one English classroom?2.What might be the potential causes of English classroom silence in senior high school grade one?3.What measures can senior high school grade one English teachers take to improve classroom silence?The results show that the phenomenon of classroom silence in senior high school grade one English classroom is very common.The factors leading to this silence’phenomenon are mainly from the following three aspects: students,teachers and external environment.Students’ aspect mainly includes the students’ English learning motivation,language ability,conformity psychology,lack of confidence;teachers’ aspect includes the teachers’ teaching methods,teachers’ improper feedback,teachers’ questioning strategy;external environment’ aspect includes Chinese traditional culture,English classroom atmosphere,the current evaluation system.According to the above reasons,this thesis puts forward the corresponding strategies from the three aspects of students,teachers and external environment.At first,students should improve their language ability and self-confidence,which includes balancing the opportunities for class presentations so that every student can participate in activities and experiencing success and gaining confidence.Then,English teachers should improve their education concept,which includes changing the traditional teaching methods and reducing the phenomenon of teachers controlling the class,giving students appropriate feedback and improving questioning skills and making questions less demanding and difficult.The external environment’ aspect includes creating a relaxed,democratic and harmonious classroom atmosphere and establishing a good class culture.In a word,this thesis has a certain reference value to improve students’ enthusiasm to participate in class and improve students’ learning efficiency and teachers’ teaching efficiency.
