General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards advocates the activity-based approach to English learning,and emphasizes students’ subjectivity and initiative in English class.However,negative silence in English class,is not only detrimental to the development of students’ subject core competency,but also to the smooth progression of teachers’ instructional activities.Therefore,it is very necessary to further explore the silence phenomenon in English class in senior high school.This research conducted a survey on 180 students in senior two of a high school in Baise,and mainly answered two questions: 1)what is the status of negative classroom silence in senior high school English class? 2)what is the influencing degree among teacher factors,student factors,traditional culture factors,classroom environmental factors and English class silence phenomenon in senior high school?Data were collected through classroom observations,questionnaire and interviews.The results show that: 1)negative classroom silence in senior high school English class is relatively serious;2)teachers,students,traditional culture and classroom environmental factors do have a great influence on the silence in senior high school English class.Among them,the classroom environment and students are the main factors causing the silence in English class.In order to reduce the phenomenon of negative silence in senior high school English classes and provide some reference for English teachers to deal with classroom silence,the researcher puts forward two aspects of countermeasures based on the research results.The first is in classroom environment: improving the explicit classroom environment,establishing a scientific and reasonable decoration of three-dimensional space;reshaping the implicit classroom environment,creating a harmonious and coadjutant,positive and enterprising,democratic and equal classroom’atmosphere.The second is in students’ factors: creating diversified oral English situations to improve students’ English skills;integrating learning strategies of multi lesson types to improve students’ learning habits;establishing student mental health files to help introverted students change;applying multimedia technology to stimulate students’ interests and correct their learning motivations.
