In order to deepen the new curriculum reform of ordinary high schools,the 2020 revised version of the High School English Curriculum Standards points out that in order to cultivate students’ autonomous,cooperative and exploratory learning ability,teachers should create a supportive and stimulating learning environment for students.However,in the actual high school English class,teachers often neglect to create a positive classroom environment in order to complete the teaching plan,which leads to the widespread silence phenomenon.What is the real situation of high school English classroom environment at present? What is the level of classroom silence? Does the classroom environment have a significant effect on students’ silent behavior? These problems are the entry point and research topic of this paper.In this study,Middle School English Classroom Environment Scale and High School English Classroom Silence Scale were used as measuring tools.210 students in Grade One and Grade Two of a middle school in Dazhou,Sichuan Province were surveyed by questionnaires to understand their perception of English classroom environment and the degree of classroom silence.On this basis,the relationship between perception of English classroom environment and classroom silence is analyzed.Secondly,in order to supplement the deficiency of questionnaire survey and deeply explore the real situation of high school students’ English classroom,classroom observation and student interview are also adopted.The survey results show that:(1)High school students’ perception of English classroom environment is at the middle and upper level;There is no significant difference in students’ perception of English classroom environment;There is no significant difference in students’ perception of English classroom environment in different grades.(2)The silence of senior high school English class is above the average level;There is no significant gender difference in classroom silence;There is significant difference in classroom silence among different grades,and the silence degree of senior students is higher.(3)The five dimensions in the high school English classroom environment are negatively correlated with classroom silence,and the high school English classroom environment has a significant negative impact on classroom silence.Finally,on the basis of data analysis,four suggestions are summarized to create good classroom environment to cope with classroom silence: building teacher-student relationship from life to vita;setting tasks before class and establishing students’ responsibilities;carrying out effective group cooperative learning;cultivating institutional and intrinsic class culture.
