A Report On The Translation Of Witty Remarks About Life Taken From Confucian Classics From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

From the perspective of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this article studies the translation of cultural texts by taking Witty Remarks about Life Taken from Confucian Classics as the example. Confucian culture is an important part of Chinese traditional culture. As the world is becoming closer, more and more foreign researchers are interested in the study of Confucian culture. The book Witty Remarks about Life Taken from Confucian Classics written by Song Tiantian gives the definition of the Confucian witty words, shows the personal inspiration, and expounds some wise life philosophy, thus to give certain enlightenment to people in their everyday life.Through the translation research of the different chapters of Witty Remarks about Life Taken from Confucian Classics, including Job Seeking, Moral Characters, Self-Cultivation, Honesty and Credibility, Ways of Being, this report analyses the characteristics and translation difficulties of this work under the guide of functional equivalence theory and deeply explore the corresponding translation strategies and methods. In this work, Confucian classic words are concise and refined with rich and profound connotation. However, cultural difference restricts the translation of Confucian classic words. Therefore, this article analyzes the original text from the levels of syntax and discourse. By analyzing the original text, it tries to find the translation strategies. Under the condition of ensuring the equivalence of the function and meaning of the translation version to the original text, the translator should follow the principle of "foreignization" and "domestication" and take such strategies as amplification, omission, adaptation, to dissolve the differences in language expression and logic cohesion in Chinese and English, and realize translation equivalence in meaning and form, especially the equivalence of the function, thus to ensure the accuracy of the translation.
