| The translator’s identity has been in an invisible position in translation studies for a long time, and the translator is seen as a slave to translation.Since the emergence of “cultural turn” in the field of translation studies, the translator’s subjective role in translation has been widely noticed by scholars.Since eco-translatology was put forward by Hu Gengshen, both translation as adaption and selection and translator-centered theory under eco-translatology have strongly advocated the translator’s subjective initiative in the process of translation, which has laid a foundation and opened up a new direction for the study of translator’s subjectivity. From the perspective of eco-translatology,the translator should first adapt to the ecological environment of translation of the source language and the target language, and then choose and transform among the cultural dimension, the communicative dimension and the linguistic dimension. These behaviors of the translator fully demonstrate the translator’s subjectivity in translation.Wolf Totem is an unprecedented book with ecological literary significance, which vividly reveals the inherent relationship of everything in the grassland, especially the great contribution of the wolf to the whole grassland and ecology, which has become an iconic cultural phenomenon in the early 21 st century.Wolf Totem has been translated into different language versions in many countries, and the English translation of Wolf Totem translated by the eminent American translator Howard Goldblatt is very popular among the readers.Based on this, this thesis will study the translator’s subjectivity in the translation of Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem with the case study from the perspective of eco-translatology.This thesis through case analysis explains how the translator adapts to the ecological environment of translation in terms of linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, and makes better choices for the presentation of the translation. It is found that the translator’s adaptation and selectionin three dimensions are independent and interrelated each other. In the process of translation,Goldblatt brings into full play his activeness, and skillfully and flexibly utilizes the corresponding translation strategies and translation methods to deal with the differences between source language and target language.Nevertheless, the translator’s subjectivity is also influenced and restricted by the requirements of the ecological environment of translation and ecological balance. It can be seen that the research of translator’s subjectivity in eco-translatology has a great academic significance and reference value in the field of translation studies. |
