| After thirty years’ study and exploration, Jiang Rong spent six years writing his first long novel, Wolf Totem. The English version is translated by Howard Goldblatt, a famous American sinologist and translator. Wolf Totem is considered as a semi-autobiographical novel which describes an urban educated youth’s story together with the wolves and nomadic people in Inner Mongolian grassland in the 1960s and 1970s. It is a book of miracle, depicting the grassland wolves. The novel vividly reflects Mongolian culture, custom, history and belief, in which culture-loaded words are numerous.Culture-loaded words are the special words existing in a certain culture which have rich cultural connotations. China is an ancient nation with a history of more than five thousand years. Its culture is of long standing. In its language, there are numerous culture-loaded words and expressions with distinctive Chinese characteristics. Study of culture-loaded words translation not only contributes to language development, but also benefits cross-cultural communication.Translator’s subjectivity is the translator’s initiative and creativity in the whole process of translation. The translator brings his thoughts and wisdom into the translated text during his translation of the culture-loaded words instead of mechanical translation. The translation process is the process of the translator’s interpreting the original work. At the same time, it is also the process of the translator developing his initiative and creativity.This thesis mainly studies culture-loaded words in Howard Goldblatt’s English version of Wolf Totem from the perspective of translator’s subjectivity, which aims at analyzing culture-loaded words translation in Wolf Totem and translator’s subjectivity reflected in translating these culture-loaded words. The author sincerely hopes to provide some references for culture-loaded words translation in literary works and help foreign readers know more about Chinese culture through culture-loaded words. |
