Exegetical Studies On Ogy? Sorai's Duxunzi

Ogy? Sorai's Duxunzi is the first book which does exegetical studies on Xunzi in Edo period.After the publishment of the book,more and more scholars paid attention on Xunzi and the methods of exegetics whether they agreed Sorai's opinions or not.Even though Ogy? Sorai is a Japanese scholar,he insisted that Japanese scholars should learn to speak and wirte in Chinese when they were doing Chinese text research.Sorai made references to Fang Yizhi's Tongya and other Chinese books in Duxunzi.Therefore,Duxunzi was an advanced research book in Edo period,it helped other scholars understand Xunzi,inspired them the methods of exegetical study.This thesis aims to analyse Duxunzi's document through comparison and comprehensive research.It consists of the following parts:The introduction focuses on the current research of Duxunzi,introducing the research methods of this thesis.The second chapter introduces the author Ogy? Sorai and book Duxunzi.As to the book Duxunzi,this part shows that how Duxunzi was organised as a book.By analysing the structure and content of the text,it helps to understand the collation and annotation of Xunzi by Ogy? Sorai.The third chapter tries to do a comparative study between Duxunzi and Fushan's Xunzipingzhu in order to find out why Chinese scholars and Japanese scholars would choose the same text—Xunzi as their research object and use almost the same methods.This part shows that Confucian studies have its own logic of development.The forth chapter analyses the methods of the exegetical studies of Duxunzi,including explaining the meaning of words and sentences,finding the error in the text,analysing the grammar and structure and so on.The last chapter is a summative part.It comments the achivements and the inadequacies of Duxunzi.
