As the important successor to the Zhang-Huang School, Mr. Lu Zongda made constructive achievements in Chinese exegetics. He focused on studying Shuo Wen Jie Zi, combined the three aspects-form, sound and sense-together. By connecting his research results with the ancient literature and the system of Chinese semantic vocabulary of exegetical materials, he had an insight into the relations of form, sound and sense of Chinese characters and made significant exploration of other problems involved. He followed the traditions of Zhang-Huang School, which took Chinese exegetics theory as important as its practice. Complying with the demand of the times, he sorted out Chinese exegetics theoretical system, which is hidden in the works of Chinese exegetics, elaborately, and ultimately transformed it scientifically. An important characteristic of Chinese traditional etymology is that it considers etymology as a historical phenomenon, whereas the research method is flat instead of its chronological record. On full understanding of this important characteristic, Mr. Lu Zongda summarized the gain and loss of Chinese traditional etymology in theory, and clarified a series of related problems about it. Finally, he momentously pushed the study of Chinese traditional etymology with prominent achievements. This thesis makes a detailed description about Lu Zongda’s achievements in Chinese exegetics, and tries to illustrate the reasons and the influence of his achievements through horizontal and longitudinal comparison.
