A Study On Newly Found Damaged“epitaph Of Mengfufang Yelü Tongjun”in Khitan Large Script

The Epitaph of Mengfufang Yelu Tongjun in Khitan Large Script studied in the current paper is a new material which has not yet been made public.It is observed from the rubbings of the damaged epitaph that the existing total is about 735 words Based on the word forms seen in the rubbings and related photos,the author has completed reliable electronic records,and put forward her own interpretation opinions in the aspects of the form,pronunciation and meaning of Khitan large script extensively absorbing the previous research results,and referring to relevant historical materials and literatureIn the aspect the form,the author makes a comparative study of the previous researches and identifies six new word forms and another one word form that is similar to the Khitan large script that has appeared before and might be its alloglyph.In the study of word meaning,the author,according to the corresponding relation between the Khitan large script and the Khitan small script,interprets that(?)equals(?)η-i tf-ou,denoting "Yizhou(a place name)";(?)equals(?)fu iun,denoting "Fuyin(an official title)" In addition,the author also interprets the Chinese loanword(?)t ’-uη k-em denoting an official title"Tongjian";(?)si k-iun denoting an official title "Sijun";and(?)∫i t∫-ou denoting a place name "Shizhou",and so on.In the aspect of phonetic research,through sorting out materials of Khitan large and small script,the author observes that the corresponding form in the Khitan small script of(?),a word that often occur together in the materials in Khitan large script,is(?)t’au-s-o-ul-γa-ai.Although its meaning is unknown,it can be inferred that(?)equals(?).Based on the interpretation result of Khitan small script,the phonetic value of(?)can be reconstructed as u:l.Besides,the author also expound on some grammatical phenomena of such words as "shi" denoting "marry" and "shi" denoting "event" or"pig in Terrestrial Branch" in the study.In the conclusion,the present paper includes the glossing that reflects the interpretation results of academic community.And an index of all Khitan words seen in the epitaph,indicating the frequency and source of each word is attached in the Appendix to provide convenience for the academic research in the future.
