Study On "the Epitaph Of Ye L(u|¨) Te Mian Lang Jun" In Khitan Large Script

In 2005, Ar Horqin Banner museum obtained a picture of tombstone in Khitan script of Liao Dynasty, of which the original stone have obtained on July 6,2006 by Ar Horqin Banner museum. It is reported that the stone was unearthed from the Yelii Yuzhi’s family cemetery in Chogt Mountain Han Som, Ar Horqin Banner, Inner Mongolia. The tombstone is of red sandstone, in a shape of upper circular and bottom square, of 96 cm in height,56 cm in width, and 9.5 cm thick. The front side of the tombstone was carved with 15 lines,610 Khitan large scripts, and the reversed side was with 6 lines, 177 scripts, and totally 21 lines,787 scripts. The stone was neatly engraved and well preserved, which is one of the inscriptions in fine condition, now preserved in Ar Horqin Banner museum. Previously, Mr. Liu Feng Zhu and other scholars have conducted a monographic research on this epitaph and named is as "Epitaph of Duoluoliben Langjun" and proposed a lot of beneficial views. According to the previous research, the ancestor of the epitaph owner is Qinde who is Diela, the son of Yi Zu that recorded in "Table of Princes" in "History of Liao " Volume Sixty Four. The fourth-generation descendent of Qinde is Yelu Yuzhi, so the epitaph owner is the descendent of Yelu Yuzhi. However, limited by the reading level, many words have not been investigated thoroughly. However, due to the limited interpretation of the Khitan large scripts, there are still many scripts that haven’t been thoroughly explored. This paper intends to have a more systematic collation and study on this epitaph on the basis of the previous studies and proposes the author’s own views on pronunciation and meaning of some Khitan large scripts. Currently, in the academic field, there are various names of "Duoluoliben"(多罗里本),"Duoliben"(夺里本),"Tulibu"(突里不) of this epitaph. According to the already interpreted word (?) in Iine2 with no dispute, this paper named the epitaph as "Epitaph of Yel u Temian Langjun"For providing a more reliable transcription, the author went to Ar Horqin Banner Museum in person to have a site visit in late July 2015, and completed the collation and the copy. Then, on the basis of different research findings, this paper have interpreted some words and proposed the following opinions:1. Large script (?)、(?) are the additional parts of indicative mood of verbs past tense2. (?) is additional part of adjectival verb3.(?) means "阙 (que)",东亚 means "东达领(dong da ling)" 东pronounces as "doru",亚pronounces as "tal(?)n",(?) means "天显(tian xian)",(?)可means "two".4.The following several groups variants are found: (?),币币,(?), (?),京京,东东.Finally,referring to the research results of Khitan scripts studies at home and abroad,this paper has concluded a table of interpreted Khitan large scripts with their corresponding Khitan small scripts.
