This report is based on the translation of the criminal judgment decided by Alameda County Superior Court and released by the Supreme Court of California on June 18,2018.In the case, the defendant was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to death, because he torture-murdered a 21-month-old girl in 1999.This judgment describes the process of the crime and a jury's decision, and discusses the issue of credibility of child witness' s testimony and the issue of due process. The author tries to provide a reference of criminal judgment by translating the judgment,so as to invoke people's reflection on the difference between China and the United States in criminal judgment. In this report, the author introduces the background and significance of the translation practice, and analyzes the nature of the judgment from the perspective of text typology,as well as the features of the judgment at the levels of lexicon and syntax. To ensure the smooth translation of the judgment, the author chooses the principles of accuracy, clarity, concision and consistency as the guideline during the translation. In addition, the author describes the pre-translation process in detail and gives some examples in the part of Case Study. As the judgment is a legal text and legal translation involves laws and legal language, the author aims to convey some basic information of foreign criminal judgment while studying legal language.
