This report intends to analyze the interpreting strategies and methods, difficulties and problems during the author’s consecutive interpretation for Conference on Buddhist Culture and Charity in Southeast Asia from the perspective of memetics.Memetics, based on Darwin’s theory of evolution,is a relatively new theory to explain evolution and transmission of cultural phenomena with meme as its core.Chesterman is the first scholar who applied memetics to translation theory studies. He states that the development of translation theory is the result of constant replication and transmission of translation memes. In this report, the author connects memetics with interpreting related to Buddhism. From the perspective of memetics, the interpreting process is the process of memes’ replication and transmission, including four stages: assimilation, retention, expression and transmission.During this process, the interpreter replicates and transmits cultural memes or language memes of source language to target listeners by using target language. In this process, the interpreter applies relevant interpreting strategies and methods to accomplish the effective transmission of memes. This report includes five parts. The first part is task description. This part mainly introduces the task process including preparation and on-site interpreting. The second part is research on interpreting related to Buddhism in China. The third part is theory introduction. This part introduces the origin and development of memetics and its application in translation and interpreting. The fourth part is case analysis. The author applies memetics to analyze the strategies and methods of interpreting Buddhism memes, and points out the difficulties and problems she met during the interpreting process. The last part is conclusion. This part includes the author’s major findings, this report’s limitations and suggestions to future study on interpreting related to Buddhism.
