On Interpreting Strategies Of Words With Chinese Characteristics From The Perspective Of Memetics

The premier’s press conference is an important window for the world to know about China’s major policies.The content of the conference covers a wide range of hot topics in the domestic and international community and have attracted the attention of countries all over the world.As an important bridge for international conference communication interpreting quality of interpreters will directly affect whether the purpose of conference communication can be achieved and the establishment of a good international image of our country.Official press conferences have strong political nature and high political sensitivity,which requires interpreters to convey accurately.However,words with Chinese characteristics are a major difficulty in conference interpretation which brings some difficulties to interpreters therefore it is very important to explore the interpretation strategies of words with Chinese characteristics.This paper will conduct strategic research and summarize the bilingual corpus of words with Chinese characteristics in the Premier’s Press Conference from 2018-2020 from the perspective of meme theory.Memetics as an emerging theory has attracted extensive attention from all academic circles.Scholars in different fields have tried to combine the disciplines they study with memetics to obtain new ideas and inspirations.Chesterman,a Finnish scholar was the first to apply memetics to translation studies.He regards translation studies as a branch of memetics and refers to the concepts or viewpoints related to translation and translation theories as translation memes,such as the theoretical concepts,norms,strategies and values of translation(Chersterman,2016).From the perspective of meme theory,language itself is a kind of meme and the meme transmitted through language is called language meme.Based on the above concepts,words with Chinese characteristics can be regarded as a kind of meme,the process of interpreting is a process in which memes are copied and transmitted in the cross-cultural field.Through comparative study,the author finds that there are corresponding parts between the process of interpretation and the process of meme transmission,and draws a diagram that can reflect their respective characteristics to strengthen the correlation between interpretation and memetics.In order to better explain the guiding role of memetics in interpreting activities,the author divides the words with Chinese characteristics from the 2018-2020 Premier Press Conference corpus into three categories and conducts empirical research on the cases with the view of memetics hoping to provide some help for interpreters.
