A Study On The Chinese Translation Of The Kite Runner From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Eco-translatology is an interdisciplinary theory.Hu Gengshen introduced into the practice and studies of translation the concepts of “natural selection” and “survival of the fittest” in Darwin’s Biological Evolution theory,and put forward the theory of translation as adaptation and selection,based on which he proposed Eco-translatology.Translation is an activity of selection in which translators adapt to the translational Eco-environment.Adaptation refers to the translator adapting to the translational Eco-environment with the source text as the core.Selection refers to the translator’s selecting his/her translation with his/her identity as a part of the translational Eco-environment.Based on the theory of Eco-translatology,this thesis focuses on Khaled Hosseini’s English novel The Kite Runner and chooses its Chinese version translated by Li Jihong to discuss the translation from the perspective of Eco-translatology.During the translation process,the translator should adapt to the translational Eco-environment,including the adaptation of the original,translator themselves and the target text.Meanwhile,the translator mainly translates from linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension.The evaluation of translation depends on the degree of holistic adaptation and selection,such as three-dimensional transformations,reader’s feedback including positive and negative feedback from ordinary readers and experts,the translator’s competence in understanding the source text and expressing properly in the target text.The thesis first analyzes the translational Eco-environment,including the Eco-environment of source text,the translator’s own Eco-environment and Eco-environment of the target text.Then,it analyzes the translation from three-dimensional transformations,adaptive selection theory and evaluation of translation.Last,the thesis tries to analyze its success based on the feedback from others.It concludes that Eco-translatology will help the research on the translation ofliterary work and it can be used to explain many aspects in Li’s translation,further confirming the feasibility of Eco-translatology in literary works;three dimensions in three-dimensional transformations are interdependent and connected with each other as a whole,which governs the target text and guarantees the high degree of holistic adaptation and selection.It also proved that the translator’s high degree of adaptation and selection makes the translation a success.
