Eco-translatology is a new cross-disciplinary theory proposed by Prof. HU Gengshen presumably after the mid-2000. By adopting the basic principle of "Adaptation/Selection" in Darwin’s evolutionary theory, Hu’s theory holds that translation is actually a process in which the translator tries to adapt multi-dimensionally to the translational eco-environment and makes an adaptive selection of the target text. Young and less systematic, the theory possesses a certain explanatory power for the translator’s conscious or unconscious efforts.Given this, the thesis intends to make an eco-translatological approach to Li Jihong’s bestselling Chinese translation of The Kite Runner while exploring how the translator adapts to the translational eco-environment and making corresponding adaptive selection in terms of linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. Meanwhile, the translational inappropriateness thereof is pointed out for discussion.By doing so, the Author of the thesis aims to explore the influence of translational eco-environment on translation activities through the analysis of Li’s target text and test the applicability of eco-translatology in translation practice. This Author’s practice-based research shows that an eco-translatological perspective does play a positive role in updating the translator’s and researcher’s views on translation. It seems to serve as a gate-keeper in terms of macro-control, reminding the translator from time to time that "you must, by doing effective translation in a micro manner, guarantee the survival of your translation in the target countries, thus holding the target readers.
